The president, always the last to know - Washington Post

This IRS scandal is, as expected, getting most interesting. People are asking questions about who knew what when ' a variant of Sen. Howard Baker's famous question at the Watergate hearings 40 years ago: 'What did the president know, and when did he know it?' 'I first learned about it,' President Obama said of the IRS story on May 13, 'from the same news reports that I think most people learned about this. I think it was on Friday.' That would be May 10. Which means, except for the acting deputy assistant gardener, he was maybe the last person in the White House to hear about it. In fact, it increasingly appears that just about everyone knew about the Treasury Department inspector general's report, which was released May 14, on the Internal Revenue Service's targeting of tea party groups for special scrutiny of their applications for tax-exempt status. But under the administration's 'Don't tell Dad' policy, no one bothe

Donte' Stallworth OK'd after hot-air balloon accident - NFL News

Donte' Stallworth is back in business. NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported on Friday that the veteran wide receiver has been cleared to resume football activities on the heels of his March hot-air balloon accident. Stallworth and his girlfriend suffered burns when the balloon they were riding over Miami collided with power lines. Stallworth suffered no permanent damage, but the incident shook him. "In that moment, I thought my eyes would close and I'd never wake up again," Stallworth said in April. Stallworth hopes to resume his career, but whether or not he'll draw interest from an NFL team is another story. At 32, he's played for six different clubs since 2006 and has just 84 catches over the past four seasons. One logical landing spot might be with the New England Patriots, where Stallworth had a cup of coffee in 2

North Jersey's complete guide to local shopping - NorthJersey.com (blog)

Friday, May 17, 2013 Sometimes you can debate turning points in a game. This one was indisputable. The Bruins went on the power play at 2:20 of overtime after Derek Dorsett interfered with Rich Peverley and, from there, the Rangers never had a chance. The Bruins had six shots on the power play, plus Jaromir Jagr hit the crossbar, and Zdeno Chara's tip started a three-on-two break that culminated with Patrice Bergeron's cross-ice feed to the crease for Brad Marchand's winner at 15:40 of the extra period. That dropped Henrik Lundqvist's record in overtimes to 3-11, which really doesn't seem right. 'I thought it was pretty even going into the overtime,' coach John Tortorella said. 'But we got spanked in the overtime.' Here's the game story from The Record and http://www.northjersey.com.sports. 'There was a two-on-one, I guess and I thought I made a bad decision,' Lundqvist said of the winner. 'I mean, it's a tough play but

Royals outfielder Dyson likely to go on the DL - Kansas City Star

OAKLAND, Calif. ' The Royals' outfield could be getting a new look as soon as Friday night. Chris Carlson Jarrod Dyson walked off the field after injuring his ankle when he climbed the wall attempting to catch a Mike Trout homer on Wednesday. All signs point to the Royals putting outfielder Jarrod Dyson on the disabled list because of an ankle injury he suffered Wednesday at Anaheim when he climbed the wall attempting to catch a Mike Trout home run. The Royals are expected to recall outfielder David Lough from Class AAA Omaha to replace Dyson on the 25-man roster. Lough, who has a .340 average with 17 RBIs and a .393 OBP, was held out of Thursday's game in Omaha. However, even if Lough is recalled, it's uncertain how the move will affect playing time for right fielder Jeff Francoeur. Increased playing time in recent games for Dyson and Elliot Johnson stemmed primarily, Royals manager Ned Yost said, from a desire to ride a player's hot streak. Yost dismiss

Insight: Dimon has big say over who serves on JPMorgan board - Reuters

JPMorgan Chase & Co CEO Jamie Dimon speaks about the state of the global economy at a forum hosted by the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) in Washington October 10, 2012. Credit: Reuters/Yuri Gripas By Nadia Damouni, David Henry and Ross Kerber Thu May 16, 2013 12:51am EDT (Reuters) - For years, JPMorgan Chase & Co Chairman and CEO Jamie Dimon and other executives have hand-picked new directors, in a practice that is now unusual for a major U.S. bank. The JPMorgan board's governance committee, responsible for hiring new members, relies almost entirely on referrals from management to find director nominees, according to two sources familiar with the bank's practices and a review of bank regulatory filings. All of the other 10 largest U.S. banks say they use executive search firms, which have knowledge of a range of possible candidates. An examination of the bank's selection process, which until now has been little known, could prompt questions about how m

Eminem Was Not Almost Stabbed to Death in New York City - E! Online

Another day means another Internet death hoax. Rapper Eminem was the latest celeb to be the center of a fake story swirling around the Internet, but it wasn't about the artist dying from some freak accident (hackers come up with the most interesting stories these days). This time it was a Facebook post, which showed a gruesome photo of a man (that was supposedly the rapper) getting shanked with a knife, that said the star was "left nearly DEAD after being stabbed 4 times in NYC!" NEWS: Chris Rock hints at Eminem collaboration Em's rep denied the rumor, telling E! News the post was "not true. He remains unstabbed." (That's always good to hear.) Additionally, the man in the photo was not the real Slim Shady, and clicking on the story only opened Pandora's box of Internet spam. The rapper is currently getting ready to release his latest album'which may or may not include a vocal appearance by Chris Rock'and will headline a few major

Revival of '24' Is More Like '12' - New York Times

Kelsey McNeal/Fox Kiefer Sutherland will be back in action as Jack Bauer. Everything's quicker these days. Even '24.' Adam Taylor/Fox 'To have the chance to reunite with the character, Jack Bauer, is like finding a lost friend,' says Kiefer Sutherland, shown here in a '24' episode that was broadcast in 2009. The Fox network said on Monday that it was bringing back '24,' the counterterrorism drama that stoked the American public's fears after the Sept. 11 attacks, as a 12-episode series next year. The show's original conceit, a story that plays out in real time over a 24-hour period, will stay intact, but the producers will skip some hours and condense others to fit into the 12-hour format. Kiefer Sutherland will return in the title role of Jack Bauer, a secret agent who will stop at nothing to stave off impending attacks. 'It'll be dictated by the plot,' Kevin Reilly, the chairman of Fox Broadcasting, told reporters at a

Restaurant Association Opposes Dropping Legal Blood Alcohol Limit - CBS2 Chicago

CHICAGO (CBS) ' The American Beverage Institute warns dropping the legal blood alcohol limit to .05 will backfire by devastating the restaurant industry, actually reducing public safety, and do nothing to attack the core of the drunk driving problem. Restaurant Association Opposes Dropping Legal Blood Alcohol Limit WBBM Newsradio's John Cody Sara Longwell, Managing Director of the American Beverage Institute says the NTSB simply got it wrong. 'We have got to figure out how to target hardcore drunk drivers and the NTSB is failing to do that with this recommendation. When you take your scarce police resources and you focus them on moderate, responsible social drinkers instead of that hardcore population, you weaken the police officers ability to go after hardcore drunk drivers,' said Longwell. NC Bill May Make Buying a Tesla Illegal - ABC News

A proposed bill in North Carolina that would make it illegal for electric car maker Tesla Motors to use its direct-sales method to sell cars in the state. The bill, which passed the state Senate in a unanimous vote Monday night, would prohibit car manufacturers or dealers from selling their cars to consumers without using a licensed dealer. Manufacturers would be barred from "using a computer or other communications facilities, hardware, or equipment" to sell or lease a car to anyone in the state, according to the legislation. If approved, the bill would render a car manufacturer like Tesla unable to legally sell cars in the state. Since the company bypasses traditional dealerships by selling directly to consumers and allows buyers to place their orders online, it would not meet the state's definition of a "dealer." Tesla Motors, based in Palo Alto, Calif., and founded in 2003, made headlines when it created the first all-electric sports car, the Tesla

The surprising reason you snack at night -- and how to stop it - Fox News

Over the years, many of my clients on quests to eat healthier and lose weight have told me, "I do great all day, but at night, everything just seems to fall apart." Sometimes this happens because evening hours are less busy and structured, or because we create patterns that once formed are difficult to break, like nibbling while cooking, or always eating a sweet treat after dinner. But now, new research shows that our bodies may be physiologically programmed to crave cookies after dark. A study in the journal Obesity concludes that our internal clock, the circadian system, prompts us to reach for sweet, starchy, and salty foods in the evenings, especially around 8:00 p.m. Throughout history, this built-in need to feed may have helped our ancestors store fat to survive when food was scarce, but today, it can take a hefty toll on your health and your waistline. So, how do you fight it? Here are six tips to prevent going overboard in the evening. Connect the dots For m

'The Great Gatsby' Offers Glitzy Visuals But Nothing Else - ABC News (blog)

By David Blaustein@blaustein May 10, 2013 5:00am Warner Bros. Pictures/AP Based on the classic F. Scott Fitzgerald novel of the same name, 'The Great Gatsby' casts Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway ' and already Baz Luhrmann's film is at a deficit. Maguire, impressive and perfectly cast throughout most of his fantastic career, gets lost in Luhrmann's eye-popping, era-melding, grandiose narrative. It's odd, because Maguire's mere presence ' his big, expressive eyes, his slight, everyman vulnerable physicality ' almost always elicits empathy before he even opens his mouth. It's not working here. When we meet Nick, he's not well. He's in therapy trying to deal with an experience that has changed his life, though it's not clear whether he's been institutionalized or is just being treated by a doctor in a building that's now the cinematic visual cliché of a mental institution. We learn some things about Mr. Carraway: he c

Happy Mother's Day to my two moms - Boston Globe

May is a pretty big month in my family. Sunday, of course, is Mother's Day. My mom, Ellen, and I have often gone to a Red Sox game, complete with walking around the warning track that's opened up for fans that day. But that leaves out my other mom, Maureen, because sports are not her thing. So, my guess is we'll do something all three of us will enjoy. And while that's a fun and important day for us, less than a week later on May 17th we'll remember a pivotal moment for our family and many others: Nine years ago, my moms were one of the very first couples to marry in Massachusetts. I was 15 at the time, and it was a whirlwind of a day: getting their marriage license at Newton City Hall, then off to Probate Court to get an exemption to the three-day waiting period. In the late afternoon, on a sparkling spring day that felt more like June, we returned to City Hall. I stood with my moms while the Mayor married them in his office as cameras flashed from every
