"The Office" may be closing up shop, but the Dunder Mifflin paper brand is hoping to stay in business.

The sitcom's fictional paper product company became a real brand in 2011, thanks to a deal between NBC and Quill.com, a subsidiary of Staples Inc.

Quill has since expanded Dunder Mifflin from a copy paper vendor into a powerhouse of pop cultural stationery products, hawking everything from markers to sticky notes with an "Office" twist.

During Thursday's series finale, Dunder Mifflin will air a whimsical ad spot promoting the brand on NBC. But not every market will get to see the commercial on their TV set - only viewers in Scranton, Utica, Akron, Albany, and Syracuse, the five cities where the on-screen version of Dunder Mifflin has branches.

"Office" fans outside of those markets can glimpse the commercial on YouTube. In it, a roguish Dwight-like figure discovers that he has an adapted Midas touch: Everything he touches turns into Dunder Mifflin products.

Quill hopes that the ad will help propel the popularity of the brand even as the show that inspired it retires to syndication.

Quill's director of innovation, Paul Bessinger, is confident that the paper products can survive without the show.

"We want to remind people that, while first-run episodes may be ending, a growing list of thousands of companies continues to have a little bit of 'The Office' in their office," Bessinger said in a statement to The Syracuse Post-Standard.
